What you are playing

fn = n f0√1 + B n2

Each string is a stiff steel string fixed at both ends. It vibrates as a sum of modes, and stiffness pushes the higher ones sharp; B grows about tenfold every two octaves up the treble. That stretch is why pianos are tuned slightly wide.

x0 = L/8

The felt hammer strikes an eighth of the way along, at a node of the eighth mode, so that partial never sounds. Harder blows shorten the contact time to a millisecond or so, which brings out the upper partials: loud notes are brighter.

|fm − fn| < 12 ¢

With the pedal down, every damper lifts. Any string with a partial within a few cents of a partial you play picks up energy and sings along quietly: sympathetic resonance. The sound is synthesised from the same modes you see.
